a musing...

every day i diligently drink down a little red pill. for twenty-one pills each month one thought secretly slips into my mind and holds my attention. for two or three days a month i stare at the little white pills, waiting expectantly for the familiar cramping. when it arrives, i dutifully re-fill the blue package...

i can't be the only woman who is excited by the prospect that her birth control may have failed...

summerside

j. asked me today if he should play in a july 4th concert he's appeared in years past. i said "nope." he asked "why's that?" and i said "because we'll be out of the country."

another road trip. this one north to a lovely island accessible by ferry only. this is a land i've wanted to visit since my third grade years of reading "anne of green gables." at first we thought of renting a cabin, but most had two bedrooms. i searched around and found a beautiful inn with a lovely pool, free continental breakfast, and a kitchenette en suite. it's fairly close to the ocean, so i'm picturing long days of sitting on a beach with a book. sort of like our honeymoon.

how lovely.

our top film picks

so j. and i have received netflix for over two years now. j. being who he is, we have kept a list of every movie and rated them on a 1-10 scale (which my genius brother informs me we should divide by two and add 3.5 to get the bell curve). here is a graph of the bell curve, created by said genius brother:

pandora's box sounds like...

so i have discovered this amazing web site that takes a music artist you love and then suggests music by other groups they think you will love based on your initial choice. amazing. i typed in dar williams, mazzy star, coldplay, and ryan adams and suddenly have had non-stop music playing for over an hour. new stuff, but things i really like. then it lets you save all of the music you hear that you just love. it creates "radio stations" based on the artists you choose and keeps playing. i've sat here at the computer much longer than usual just to listen longer. and now i'm thinking headphones would be a good investment.

also, if you want to break your heart, start by listening to Goodbye My Lover, by James Blunt.

filed jointly

so we filed our taxes yesterday.

why are those forms so complicated? they ask questions and then give you links to explanations of the questions that just confuse you more. i don't know if we answered everything correctly, but we sure tried to be honest and i think that's all you can do when it's so ridiculously impossible to understand.

anyhow, somewhere between the student credit and the marriage credit we landed a large sum of unexpected cash. it's nice to know that uncle sam recognizes that a family living below the poverty line deserves a break once a year.

what did i do with my refund? i went to the toy store.

well, first i bought a plane ticket to florida so i can visit my brother, his wife, and my darling baby-girl niece. then i went to the toy store to buy all kinds of presents for a sweet little girl.

to tell the truth, toys 'r' us did not impress me at all. such cheap crap in there--everything is mass produced and plastic with batteries. ugh. even the cabbage patch kids have hot pink stripes in their hair. and what is with these 'bratz' dolls? they are so ugly. everything is so sexed up. where are the toys that speak to childhood innocence and wholesomeness? i looked at the baby dolls there. some were downright scary. i can't believe someone would manufacture (and yes, they are manufactured, not crafted) those ugly things. the rest were so cheaply made. half of them came sitting on toilets. disgusting. i left toys 'r' us empty handed. well, okay. two very small gifts from there. but i had hoped to buy heaps.

today j. and i went to ipswich for lunch at choates. a lovely teriyaki chicken salad for me and a ham and cheese sandwich for j. then we walked across the street to the best specialty toy store i have ever been to in my life. all the toys in there scream wholesome innocence and childhood. we walked away with heaps.
