Happy Halloween, Elenora!

so today started out with ballet. this was her 3rd class, and when the girls lined up to go into the classroom, s. and i just let them go in without us. we looked at each other and said "should we go in?" and then we figured we'd see how they did without us. after 4 minutes we realized they were having fun and not even thinking about us, so we ran across the street for lattes. what fun. at the end of the class i poked my head around the door and ella, who had her back to me, was following along as they all went through a little "routine" to the song "i'm comin' out so you'd better get this party started." oh my gosh, it was the cutest thing i'd ever seen in my life. she was probably a half step behind the other girls, but she was really involved and paying attention and you could tell she wanted to be doing the steps. i love it. love ballet class. and i can tell she does too.

when we got home, j. and i walked ella downtown to sofia's for a meal (i hadn't had breakfast yet, and ella needed lunch). while we waited for our breakfast order, ella played with the little jelly containers. she lined them all up and said "everybody face the wall" and then had them do shimmies and floor exercises, just like in ballet (the teachers line them all up facing the wall when they do the routine). then j. ripped a straw paper into short pieces and she handed them all out to the jellies so that they'd each have sashes. she gave one jelly the name of "aurora" and one the name of "ella", and then there was a creamer for the teacher. okay, i can't even quote how cute she was and how active her imagination was with all the role playing with the jellies. but it was so cute.

i tried getting elenora down for a nap, but between all the morning activities and the various candies everyone seemed to be handing out to her today for halloween, she did not sleep at all. so i got her up at 2:40 and we were outside no later than 3 pm--dressed in her butterfly costume, of course. our afternoon was then spent walking all over the neighborhood (it was 73 degrees outside and super windy today) and making piles of leaves to jump into. so lovely. she's so much fun. her sense of humor and her memory just continue to entertain me.

truly, my favorite person in the world.

j. was golfing until about 4 pm, and when he arrived home we took ella downtown to walk along the river and see the other children in their costumes. then back home for a special halloween dinner (butternut squash soup... it's orange) before taking elenora outside for trick-or-treating.

okay, so the weather couldn't have been any more amazing for this year's halloween. warm and windy with a full moon shining in the sky. gorgeous. elenora is usually inside getting ready for bed when it's dark outside, so it was such a huge treat for her to be outside looking at the moon and observing the night. she kept exclaiming "is there a full moon in the sky?!"

(she's not good at looking at the camera on her own...)

we took her down the next street over and then up the same street on the other side. people were just sitting out on their stoops and porches and there were children and parents everywhere. i can't remember the last time i had so much fun trick-or-treating. i love how community-oriented it is. houses that you would never approach any other time of the year you get full access to; and all the smiling faces of our neighbors really touched my heart. everyone was so nice to elenora and really made her experience something special. she would walk up to the door and say "trick or treat!" and they would hold the bowl down for her and she would very intently try to figure out which candy in the bowl might be the one she will want to eat (since she's really had very little candy in her lifetime). we found she favors lollipops, but i did have to steer her away from a twizzler at least once. (who likes those things besides my brother???)

we finished our evening reading a little book from the library about a mouse who invites all his friends to a halloween party under the full moon.

just like us.

ballet, week 2

so this morning i got to go to ballet. it was seriously awesome. the whole class is so instructive and fun with lots of music and activities that really teach the little girls about ballet positions and stretches and moves. they did bar work and a dance routine as well as lining up and going across the floor doing kicks.

this tutu was from k. for ella's birthday. so adorable.

ella and aurora were so sweet with each other.

here they are at the bar.

they did free-form dance with sashes until the music would stop and they would freeze in the various ballet positions before dancing again.

i think there's marked improvement since last week. i can see her getting into it more and following the other girls better. even her "skipping" was improved! this might turn her into a little athlete after all...

well, okay, maybe not. but it's darned cute.

after ballet k. met us all for brunch at a diner about three doors down from the dance studio. it was really fun to treat the girls to brunch while also having some "girls' time" ourselves.

last CSA pick up of the season

we picked up our last share of vegetables at the farm. i'll really miss having so many fresh, organic veggies every week. elenora has really enjoyed going with me to pick them up, and has formed a good relationship with our farmers, a. and e.

for our last pick-up our farmers borrowed a cider press and let us press apples from a local orchard as we bagged the vegetables. elenora really never drinks anything other than milk and water, so having some juice was a big treat for her.

when ella saw this bucket of carrots she exclaimed "how beautiful those carrots are!"

as we left the farm she said "there's a sunset over there! it's beautiful!" and then she noticed the trees, which were orange and yellow and red, and she exclaimed "how beautiful the trees are! everything is beautiful!"

ny getaway

j. and i left ella happily playing with her grandma for the weekend and drove out to the finger lakes of NY. we figure we've got a limited number of months (though not yet numbered) to do this kind of thing before the next kid comes along. we're so very lucky that elenora and her mam-aw get along so good that we can leave her for a few days without having to worry at all about her missing us. (i was sorry to miss her first ballet class, though!)

road trips are something that j. and i have always loved. and while we don't always have the easiest time getting along at home (where things like dishes and dirty sinks can really sap all the lovey-dovey feelings out of a couple), we always enjoy each others' company when we're out on our own.

this weekend was especially fun because there were all these randomly unexpected additions to our weekend that made it very memorable.

first off, after we were in NY quite a ways the gas tank light went on. we waited as long as we could, and then realized that even though our exit was only one exit away, we had to stop off for gasoline before then. so we got off an exit and lo and behold! The Boxing Hall of Fame! it was pretty small, and we just started laughing, but pulled in to check it out. it was 6 pm and the place closed at 5 pm, so i just took some photos of j. outside the building. but then a guy came out who must have run the place and asked who the boxing fan was. then he asked j. a few questions and, realizing this was not some clueless fan but a genuine FAN, took us over to the building with the madison square garden boxing ring in it where Ali fought Frazier. pretty exciting, right?

(we got t-shirts.)

we arrived in skaneateles around 7:30 pm and realized that our inn was located right on the lake across from the park where momby and ella and i had stopped to take photos a year and a half ago (where i fell in love with this town). our inn was gorgeous, and was absolutely hopping with activity. downstairs was a fancy dining room and also a tavern, and the tavern was packed full of yankees fans and tourists enjoying the fare. j. and i checked in and freshened up in our gorgeous room before heading down to eat dinner at the tavern.

here's the fireplace in our room, and a little desk in a nook by the bed.

we started dinner off with wine and a cheese platter that had sharp cheddar, 4 kinds of crackers, a bunch of grapes, a mustard, and a marmalade. which is really the perfect snack plate for the 2 of us.

after our meal we took a walk around the town. first we went to the park and walked out on the boardwalk that extends into the lake.

as we walked around town we saw some realty businesses advertising property and we stopped to take a look. the first thing we saw was a 4 bedroom house with a master bedroom suite and granite countertops in the kitchen, etc. $180k. we just had to laugh. how can homes everywhere else in america be priced so much lower than where we live and work?!

the next morning we started our day with a complimentary breakfast at the inn that included scrambled eggs, pastries, ham and cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit salad, and deliciously hot and dark coffee (all overlooking the lake).

we then headed out to cayuga lake to drive down the wine trail, which had over 12 wineries to choose from.

at the first winery i sampled about 4 wines and we bought a bottle of white.

this is a photo outside of the second winery, with a view of cayuga lake. to the right of this view is a basketball court. j. pulled out his basketball from the trunk and we shot around for awhile after our second tasting.

this is outside of the second winery, Goose Watch. this place had amazing wines. we sampled about 6-8 wines each. there was an incredible white wine called viognier that i really am excited about. i usually stick with new zealand white wines because they are slightly fruity and not overly-alcohol-tasting. this viognier was not at all alcohol tasting, but it wasn't fruity either. it just had amazing flavor.

here are some shots of the vinyard.

so after 2 wine tastings i was in desperate need of some water and food. so we drove down to a third vinyard where there was a restaurant. the food was really very good, although my salad was so organic that i found a piece of a branch in it about 2 inches in length and 1 inch in diameter. i just had to laugh about that.

we visited one more winery, bought a bottle of red wine, and then headed back to our inn where j. lay down while i walked to a toy store in town for a little gift for elenora. then i lay down for a nap, too. wine sure can make you sleepy!

when we woke up we wandered around town looking at menus and decided to eat dinner at a cafe on the lake.

earlier, on our drive to and from cayuga lake, we had noticed a bowling center. j. pointed out that it was probably "big ball" bowling and not candlepin bowling, so we made up our minds to go bowling that evening. it was so much fun. i started off right away with a strike and then a spare... which never happens to me. i bowled a 96 that first game. of course, my second game only raked in a 69, but we had a lot of fun there.

the next morning we took some photos of the inn and town before getting coffees at a bakery and setting off east.

on our way up on friday we passed by rome, NY, which j. realized was where his friend c. is being held in prison, so we stopped by on sunday for 2 of the visiting hours. this was my first time in a prison, so i was rather nervous, but once i was in it really wasn't too scary. this was my first time meeting c., and it was a really good visit. i could tell how much it meant to him to see j.

our trip ended with 3 hours of driving in a snowstorm throughout MA. very strange for october. the flakes were just huge, but luckily they were not sticking to the road.

momby was at our house with our sleeping baby when we arrived home. she had lovingly cleaned our bedroom while we were gone, which is just about the nicest thing anybody has ever done for me.

it was such a fun trip. i'd do it all again.

little ballerina

elenora started ballet on saturday. she's taking a half hour class with aurora in the morning. i wasn't able to be there this past saturday, but momby brought her and took a few photos.

ella is the youngest child in her class, and a lot of the girls have been taking for a year or two. they say she'll catch on.

the funny thing about this video is that ella sees a few of the other girls go too soon and she kind of likes it and gets a little rowdy--jumping the gun and "dancing" down the floor on her own.

i can't wait to go this next weekend and take photos of my own!

visit to russell orchard with mimi and poppy

so my dad had never been to russell orchard. after a pancake breakfast, we all packed up and headed out to show it to him. i promised elenora she could pick out a pumpkin while we were there. i thought she'd choose a big one, but true to her nature she liked the little ones best.

here we are with my mom.

my dad was happy to find some freshly made apple cider. i think it reminds him of vermont.

we took ella on a hayride around the orchard, which was lots of fun on such a cool but sunny day.
