this be a blanket.
2 days of rain brought us to a rare trip to the mall yesterday. i think we've taken ella to the mall 2 times in her life (including this trip), plus maybe 4 times we've gone just to picture people to have her photo taken. i really hate the mall. we did our part to stimulate the economy by purchasing 4 sheets of stickers to help occupy our time on the plane in 2 weeks. and we let ella sit on the big plastic merry-go-round. she liked the train best of all and started spontaneously saying "lovely tea mabel," which is from a book we have titled "and the train goes..." we were going to let elenora poke her head into the pet shop, but it apparently is a victim of the economic recession. which i don't mind terribly. there are too many animals in this world who need good homes without [in]breeding more just to charge $1000 for a puppy. (why does the mall bring out my soap box?) j. was hungry, so we went to the food court. also a victim of the recession, there were about 4 places offering food. not wanting to give ella sushi or pizza, we ended up at mcdonalds. oh the shame on my face as i sat there feeding my baby chicken nuggets and milk from a bottle with a weird red-and-yellow man on it! j. remarked on how uncomfortable i looked. that food is so nasty. ugh.
for mother's day this year j. gave me the gift of an hour long massage at a local spa, which happened yesterday. massages are not something i ever really treat myself with, so it was such a special experience. half-way through the massage i kind of got choked up because it meant so much to me to be the one getting taken care of. being a mother, you are always the one taking care of someone other than yourself.
last night as i was dressing ella after her tub she started pointing to her toes and saying "this piggy went market, this piggy stayed home." it was so adorable.
sunday i stopped by a yard sale and found an antique doll who is about 7 inches tall with eyes that open and shut, strawberry blonde hair, and a fancy spanish flamenco outfit with sequins and gold thread. ella has nothing like this doll, who we named "dolly." at first she was a little bit nervous about the doll opening and shutting her eyes--she kept looking at me and saying "mommy fix it." but now she is really sweet with her dolly. today in the car she was eating some crackers and drinking some water and she kept offering some to dolly. so cute.
i made a bread pudding today. oh my god it's good. there's nothing healthy about it. but i had some crusty leftover french bread and raisins etc. and the aroma as it cooked was so fragrant. j. and i had a bowl when it was still warm and it was amazing.
Ingredients:
2 cups whole milk
1/4 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar (white or brown, depending on taste preference, i used brown)
3 eggs
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups bread, torn into small pieces (french bread works best)
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Directions:
1. In medium saucepan, over medium heat, heat milk (or half & half) just until film forms over top. Combine butter and milk, stirring until butter is melted. Cool to lukewarm.
2. Combine sugar, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer at medium speed for 1 minute. Slowly add milk mixture.
3. Place bread in a lightly greased 1 1/2 quart casserole.
4. Sprinkle with raisins if desired. Pour batter on top of bread.
5. Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 to 50 minutes or until set. Serve warm.
i took ella back to russell orchard this week. the guinea hens (the ones with "poke-o-dots") were chasing each other around the farm yard and jumping over things and hopping up onto the fences, and they were so comical elenora and i just stood there laughing at them. they have such small heads and such large bodies... then a goat came over to the fence and stuck its neck out of the fence and reached its nose up towards us and cocked its head and ella was laughing all over again. animals are so funny.
it's pretty cool that we parents get the opportunity to do childish things like laugh at animals--something we probably wouldn't do in front of other adults if we didn't have our children by our sides leading the way.
there was a dad there with his precocious 3-year-old daughter. i have never seen a father look less enthusiastic about spending the afternoon with his little girl. he just stood back 10 feet from her and kept saying "chloe" in an annoyed voice. and she was cute, too. not a naughty girl. it's sad, because it was the perfect set-up for him to really have fun with her. she sort of attached herself to me and ella, which was OK, but also uncomfortable because i then had this strange man following me around while i engaged his daughter in conversation. i'm so thankful for how involved j. is in elenora's life. he loves spending time with her. we're both lucky to be able to know that when we're not with ella she is being taken care of 100% wonderfully by the other parent.
yesterday morning we took ella out to breakfast (on my way to the car ella was saying "breakfast. daddy coming too.") and then we jaunted over to russell orchard for the opening day! i'm so excited that they are open again. it was surprisingly quiet for opening day, but that was really nice for letting elenora just get down and run around. here are the animals we saw (and yes, she was saying "animals" although it sounded like the classic child's "aminals"): ducks, cat, chickens, guinea hen (ella said this had "poke-o-dots"), the 1000 lb pig, a goat, 3 sheep (we got to touch one!), 3 ponies, a bunny rabbit (ella said it goes "hip-hop"), and geese. what a fun place! we saw tractors and flowers and got to feed the ducks with a little feed. it's amazing to me that we get to go there for free. endless entertainment. we'll be there a lot this summer.
